Saudi citizens will soon be able to enter the UAE with their new national identity card. The decision is effective January 12, General Salim Al Bilaihid, the Director-General of the Saudi Passports Department, said yesterday. Saudi citizens will be able to enter the UAE using only their identity cards, he said. Saudis may also enter using their passports, which will not be stamped at entry points.

He said similar arrangements are being considered with other Gulf states. Gen Al Bilaihid said the department has finalised arrangements to issue new electronic passports which will soon be available in all Saudi provinces. Expatriates working in the kingdom will also be issued new electronic residence permits soon. The permits will first be issued to expatriates in the private sector. (The Gulf News)
