Beirut - Some 22 officers and non-commissioned officers from the Engineering Unit of the UAE Armed Forces passed out here Friday, after completing a course on mine clearing operations.

The group will soon join their colleagues in Southern Lebanon to clear the area from land mines and cluster bombs. The operations are being undertaken jointly by the UAE, Lebanon and the UN.

Speaking at a graduation ceremony, Mohammed Sultan Al Suweidi, UAE ambassador to Lebanon said the efforts to clear cluster bombs from South Lebanon was just one phase of the Solidarity Project in South Lebanon which is being undertaken by the UAE.

The UAE and Lebanon signed an agreement a couple of years ago to de-mine South Lebanon. About five areas had been cleared when Israel unleashed its onslaught against Lebanon last year, infesting more areas with cluster bombs and unexploded ordinances. (Emirates News Agency, WAM)
