New book details life of Maktoum family

The most comprehensive book on the history of Dubai and its ruling family will be launched under the patronage of Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai and UAE Minister of Finance and Industry on Saturday.

Rashid's Legacy: The Genesis of the Maktoum Family and the History of Dubai is an insight into the building of Dubai into an internationally recognised city, using official documents and first hand accounts from those close to the family. Author Graeme Wilson, who was behind the 1999 book Father of Dubai, the authorised biography of the late Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, said the book was full of colour.

Wilson has used never-before published stories of Sheikh Rashid as told by his family and friends, including interviews with UAE leaders. Information has also been gleaned from the British Archives and the Queen's Archives at Windsor Castle, which help make up some of the 400 photographs contained in the book.

Wilson has also used his contacts from 15 years of living and working in Dubai and has called on British dignitaries such as former British Prime Minister Edward Heath, who met Sheikh Rashid on several occasions. There was also help from former British Foreign Secretary Robin Cook and the British foreign office who released documents on state visits made by the Maktoums. (Emirates Today)
