The UAE Red Crescent Society (RCS) has sent a fresh consignment of relief goods for the people of Palestine. According to Ahmed Siddiq Al Khaja, Deputy Director of the Relief and Projects Section of the society, a convoy of five trucks carrying 110 tonnes of relief material, including medicines and equipment, wheel-chairs, blankets and 40 tonnes of dates, had left for Jordan.

He said that the goods would be distributed in coordination with the Jordanian authorities concerned. He pointed out that the dates, which were donated by a philanthropist, would be distributed among Palestinians in refugee camps in Jordan, while the medical items and equipment have been donated by a woman to Al Naqa Al Doha surgery centre in Bethlehem.

He said that the consignment was part of a relief programme for Palestinians, undertaken by the RCS since the beginning of Intifada in September 2000, with the aim of alleviating the sufferings of the Palestinian people by providing them items of basic need, especially medicines and means of livelihood.

Mr Ahmed Siddiq said that continuous Israeli siege of Palestinian towns and refugee camps and regular intrusions by Israeli forces in those areas had badly affected basic facilities

He commended the support the RCS gets from donors and philanthropists who demonstrate their solidarity with the people of Palestine in their current situation of sufferings and hardship and respond to the calls of rendering humanitarian services to their Palestinian brothers and sisters in occupied territories.
