In view of the current global developments, which require security solutions to prevent terrorism, the UAE has embarked on a project to issue new passports for nationals with hi-tech security features, according to a senior official. Colonel Mattar Salim bin Missay'ed Al Niyadi, Director of Information Systems Department at the Ministry of Interior, said the ministry was evaluating tenders for printing of the new passports which will be introduced as part of efforts to combat terrorism, according to a report in "Khaleej Times.”

As part of its computer-networking scheme, the ministry has completed a project linking it to other ministries concerned including the Foreign Ministry, Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, Ministry of Finance and Industry, Armed Forces, Presidential Court, and security agencies. At the regional level, Col Niyadi said the ministry has been selected by the General Secretariat of the GCC to prepare a unified database for identity cards and passports for GCC citizens. A single e-passport, which will carry the emblem of the secretariat, will be issued by each state separately, with unified data that is electronically readable in any of the other states.
