Foreign ministers of nine Arab countries met in Abu Dhabi yesterday as part of a growing Arab process to consult and to enhance Arab solidarity.

In a statement made to WAM after the meeting, Foreign Minister H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan said the ministers were working to overcome this difficult time in the Arab world.

Following are excerpts from Sheikh Abdullah's statement: "Their Excellencies the Foreign Ministers of the Kingdoms of Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Jordan and Bahrain, and Egypt, Palestine, Yemen and Tunisia along with hosts the United Arab Emirates met in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday as part of a growing Arab process to consult and enhance Arab solidarity based on the call made by the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah at the Arab Economic Summit in Kuwait last month for Arab reconciliation. We are working to overcome this difficult time in the Arab world and ensure that unwelcomed, non-Arab parties do not get involved in our affairs in an un-constructive manner."

"This meeting will be followed by similar meetings in the upcoming weeks and they will involve additional foreign ministers from the Arab world. Our aim is to boost Arab solidarity and mobilise our backing for the Arab Peace Initiative, bolster support for the Palestinian Authority under the leadership of H.E. President Mahmoud Abbas and for the Palestine Liberation Organisation PLO -- the sole representative of the Palestinian people...

"The ministers here are all in support of the Egyptian initiative and Cairo's efforts with the Palestinian and Israeli sides to bring about a 'tahdia', Palestinian unity and the ministers are also preparing the ground work for a successful donor conference for the Palestinians in Egypt on March 2 and with the full involvement of the Palestinian Authority.

"The ministers also stressed the urgent need to stop all Israeli settlements, especially in e1 area around Jerusalem and voiced their deep concern for plans by Israel to expand settlement activity around the holy city "We are engaging with additional Arab countries and consulting with them. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
