No links with Israel before a Middle East peace deal: Mohammed bin Rashid

The UAE will not establish links with Israel before a Middle East peace deal, said Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Minister of Defence. "No, we should not open to Israel because the Palestinians are suffering,” said Sheikh Mohammed, in a statement reported by the AFP. "Until an agreement (on peace) is signed, we can do nothing about that,” he told reporters.

Sheikh Mohammed reiterated that the Israeli delegation to the World Bank and IMF meetings came at the invitation of the two international institutions, and not the UAE government. Sheikh Mohammed said he only saw the head of the Israeli delegation, minister without portfolio Meir Sheetrit, at a reception for delegates on Monday, but did not meet him. " I saw him at a reception for the delegates and I will not meet him.” he said. On the organisation of the meeting, Sheikh Mohammed said that the delegations were satisfied with the organisation.

On Iraq, Sheikh Mohammed said the UAE was ready to assist in the reconstruction of Iraq, but added that there are qualified Iraqi firms which can undertake the task and should be given the chance to do so. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
