Noor Dubai Foundation has commenced its third mobile eye camp out of the series of four eye camps supported by Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Presidential affairs and his wife Shaikha Manal bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, President of the Dubai Women Establishment.

The medical team screened and treated patients in the district of El-Hodeida, Yemen.

According to Dr Manal Taryam, CEO of the Noor Dubai Foundation, the camp which started last week provided sight saving treatment to patients who have come from all over the country.

"Thousands of patients suffering from vision impairment were screened and treated at the El-Hodeida camp. Until Tuesday morning, the medical team screened over 6,336 and conducted over 626 sight saving operations,” said Dr Taryam.

"Yemen is home to over 22 million residents and over one per cent of the population is blind. The main case of visual impairment in Yemen is cataract which is normally a disease of the aged, but in Yemen many children are born with congenital cataract that needs to be surgically treated to avoid permanent visual loss.”

This camp is the second of its kind in Yemen. The foundation first conducted a camp in January 2009 and treatment was provided to 11,000 individuals.

The camp which received support from the government authorities in Yemen as well as a team of medical Yemeni doctors and Optometrists, was in collaboration with Al Basar Foundation for logistic support.
