Officials act to curb visa abuse by firms

Immigration officials have launched a crackdown on fake companies set up not to do business but to illegally obtain residence visas. The crackdown comes in the wake of concern expressed over the number of illegal residents in the country. In future, all visa applications from companies operating in Ras Al Khaimah will have to be accompanied by the original municipal trade licence or an attested copy of licence.

The new rule is contained in a circular issued by the Ras Al Khaimah Naturalisation and Immigration Department. The circular states that the move has been taken following the receipt of an official letter from the emirate's municipality warning of an existence of the fake companies and the use of falsified licences.

A senior municipal official warned that the Ras Al Khaimah Municipality will closely monitor all those issued licences. Those found to be duping the authorities will not have their licences renewed and the municipality will work in co-ordination with other authorities concerned to have those visas cancelled after expiry of the licence.
