Old Al Ain parks to bloom soon posted on 13/10/2009
Following the reconstruction of several major roads and interchanges and redesigning of the downtown area, the civic administration has begun revamping some of the key parks and gardens in the Oasis City.
High on the list are the Al Hili Fun City, once the largest amusement park in the region, and the lush green Al Sulaimi Garden. Al Ain Municipality also announced the creation of a number of playing areas in residential neighbourhoods to provide sporting and gaming facilities for children.
The improvement of roads, walkways, gardens, and municipal services are part of the city's master plan that aims at sustainable development and modernisation.
Once completed, the plan will transform Al Ain into a tourists' paradise with enhanced civic and entertainment facilities, greenery and a pedestrian-friendly environment.
Awad Bin Hasoom Al Darmaki, general manager of Al Ain Municipality, said the focus is to transform the city into a health and environment friendly city enabling residents to avoid certain health problems caused by the lethargic lifestyle of the modern cities.
"We are keen on providing different sports facilities in a safe and encouraging atmosphere in residential areas, enabling young people to exercise and engage in physical activities to change the lifestyle that is believed to be a major cause of obesity and diabetes," he said.
The new projects, he said, also realised the need for enhancing the city's green environment since it has lots of positive effects on health in residential neighbourhoods. "An increase in trees and vegetation will help in reducing the carbon level besides enhancing the aesthetic aspects of the city," said the general manager.
Al Darmaki was speaking in a meeting of municipal officials organised recently to review the progress and execution of the development projects. It was attended by the municipality section heads and officials from various other departments in the city.
Talking about the projects to develop parks and gardens, Al Darmaki said the project for the development of Al Hili Fun City has been launched and the first phase is expected to be completed before Eid Al Adha, next month.
In this phase, he said, the old rides will be relocated and new games and facilities will be installed.
In the second phase, several other measures will be taken to restore the old glory of Fun City. Covering an area of a square kilometre, the Fun City is run by Al Ain Municipality.
It was inaugurated by Sheikh Tahnoun Bin Mohammad Al Nahyan, the Ruler's Representative in the Eastern Region, in October 1985.
For the past few years, more residents prefer to spend more time at Green Mubazzarah, a public park at the foothills of Jebel Hafeet.
The new developments are expected to give a new lease of life to Fun City. Similarly, Al Sulaimi Garden will also witness a major transformation as it will be demolished and rebuilt in accordance with international standards to provide a safe and healthy recreational environment. – Gulf News
