By the year-end, the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs will achieve a qualitative leap in its electronic dealings with the introduction of the virtual employment visa committee which will receive and study applications for employment visa via the Internet, according to Dr Khalid Al Khazraji, Under Secretary for Labour Affairs.

The virtual committee will deal with the applications of companies, members of the ministry's electronic unit which is currently available only in Dubai, but will soon be introduced in Abu Dhabi office and gradually in other labour offices in the UAE, Dr Al Khazraji told reporters yesterday. Elaborating on the work of the committee, he said that it would be a uniform committee charged with the task of studying the applications filed from across the UAE via the e-units. It will comprise members of labour offices in all the emirates.

According to the under-secretary, three members are enough to process and forward the application for employment visa for the ministry's approval. The virtual committee will function alongside the existing employment visa committees. Meanwhile, the ministry's e-Unit which was launched in its Dubai premises a few months ago is attracting a large number of companies. This was witnessed at the ministry's stand at GITEX which is drawing a positive response from companies and is drawing crowds to apply to the e-Unit.

Dr Al Khazraji said that the e-Unit is the first initiative at the level of a Federal department as far as offering e-Services to the public is concerned. Listing the advantages of the unit, he said that it lessens the burdens of applicants and enhances the level of performance at the ministry. Efforts are being made to link this unit to several government bodies following the success of the experience with the Dubai Naturalisation and Residency Department, he added. (The Khaleej Times)
