The opening of the International Defence Exhibition and Conference IDEX 2003 amid participation of nearly 800 leading defence manufacturers around the world shows that the UAE is a stable and secure country, said Lt. General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chief of Staff of the UAE Armed Forces. Speaking to the Emirates Television, Sheikh Mohammed said the large international participation at IDEX was also a measure of success of IDEX Exhibitions and Conferences. "The fact that many renowned defence manufacturers around the world are showcasing their products here is a measure of success of this year's show. It is also a message that the UAE, under the leadership of H.H President Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, is a stable and secure country," said Sheikh Mohammed.

He expressed satisfaction on the level of international participation, saying that organizers were faced with the challenge of whether the show would be successful to this extent, especially in view of the current circumstances in the region. Sheikh Mohammed thanked the organisers for the efforts which they had exerted to make the event a success. Asked about the latest developments on the F16 aircrafts deal between the UAE and the US, Sheikh Mohammed said the delivery plan is progressing as planned and that some 300 UAE army personnel are currently undergoing training in the US as part of this programme.

On co-operation among GCC countries, Sheikh Mohammed said this cooperation was in full swing as indicated by the deployment of Dir al Jeezira (Gulf Shield) forces in Kuwait. The deployment is part of cooperation among GCC countries. Asked about why IDEX 2003 was held at this time, Sheikh Mohammed said the UAE had been in the exhibitions industry for so long and therefore the holding of the event as originally scheduled would prove that the country is still capable of organising international exhibitions of the IDEX scale.

"We are proud of the fact we have the experience and the capability to organise such international exhibitions and conferences. We are also proud of the fact that the UAE is an oasis of peace and stability" he said. On the effects of September 11 on US relations with Arab and Islamic world and whether this has not affected Arab procurement of arms from the West and the US, Sheikh Mohammed said that each country has its own defence procurement policy in accordance with its own defence requirements.
