The Zayed University (ZU) and the Centre for Documentation and Research (CDR) have inked an agreement to document the oral history of the UAE. The three-year pact was signed yesterday at the university's campus in Abu Dhabi by Dr Sulaiman Al Jassim, ZU Vice-President and Dr Abdullah Al Reyes, Director of CDR, under the patronage of Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Presidential Affairs and Chairman of the CDR.
As per the agreement, the Media Training and Research Centre at ZU will organise a training programme for officials and employees at the CDR on the means of documenting oral history. "The history of the UAE has not been probably presented. We are thinking of writing down the history of the UAE and integrating it as a subject at the primary and university levels,” noted Dr El Reyes.
He said the Centre contains more than five million documents out of which less than 10 per cent has been written down about the UAE. He said under the agreement, the CDR will be able to avail of the technology applied at ZU as an empowered scientific centre, in compiling oral history from senior citizens residing in different parts of the country, mainly Al Ain, Abu Dhabi and Western Region.
The CDR will jointly develop higher archival studies with a number of higher educational institutions and colleges in the country, including the ZU, said Dr Reyes.
He lauded late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan for his continuous efforts to preserve this type of history, noting history compilation projects developed by the Centre are supported by Sheikh Mansour. For his part, Dr Jassim said the agreement comes as part of the cooperation between ZU and different sectors of society that aims at enhancing performance at these sectors. (Khaleej Times)
