Pak-UAE tax deal on track

Any citizen of the UAE or Pakistan subjected to double taxation after 1994 is now entitled to seek a refund of the tax paid in one of the two countries. Pakistan and the UAE signed an agreement in 1994 to avoid double taxation which was supposed to be effective from March 7, 1994. Bureaucratic procedures, however, meant that provisions of the agreement could not come into force in actual practice, and officials in Pakistan went on to rescind the original notification. A fresh notification of the Central Board of Revenue said the legal formalities necessary for the enforcement of the agreement for Avoidance of Double Taxation Pakistan and the UAE had been met. The agreement would now be deemed to have taken effect from March 7, 1994, and would have effect in Pakistan in respect of any income derived on or after July 1, 1994. (Internews)
