Abu Dhabi hosted yesterday the expert level meeting of Friends of Democratic Pakistan. Dr. Anwar Mohammed Gargash, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, and Salman Farooqi, Secretary General of Pakistan's President, co-chaired the meeting.

The UAE Minister said the meeting was complementing a similar gathering held in New York on 26 September 2008 on the sideline of the UN General Assembly meeting. The initiative is part of the international strategic partnership among friends of Pakistan, UN and EU to rally broadbased support to Pakistan's efforts towards stability, development, security, energy and institution building.

The UAE, he added, had welcomed this meeting and as it hosted before the meeting of the experts on 17 November 2008 to highlight the importance of this group to stability of Pakistan and the Middle East in general should the major world powers come together.

According to him, this meeting will be followed by the group's ministerial meeting scheduled in Tokyo on 17 April.

'Pakistan is important to the Arabian Gulf region and represents its strategic depth. Hence, extending assistance and support to Pakistan in this critical circumstances is urgent and necessary,' Dr. Gargash affirmed.
