Pakistani Foreign Minister Khurshid Kasuri hailed on Monday the United Arab Emirates for the help rendered to his country during the ordeal of the earthquake that recently jolted the South Asian state.

"President H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan has acted and the people of Pakistan are very touched by the fact that at the moment of trial, the UAE government has stood by the people of Pakistan," said Kasuri in a statement to WAM upon visiting some of the Pakistani injured being treated at the Zayed Military Hospital in Abu Dhabi.

Treatment, he added, is being given at field hospital in Muzaffarabad by the UAE field hospital which is also excellent. He said the UAE is a model in the field of humanitarian and charity works at the international level. He noted that his country had a special relationship with the late Sheikh Zayed who, he said, was loved by all Pakistanis.

"Cooperation between Pakistan and the UAE is a model for other countries to follow suit," the Minister maintained, noting that views of both countries on various regional and international issues are identical.

Kasuri said his two-day visit to the UAE, which began on Monday, was on the directives of President Pervez Musharraf to convey his thanks and that of the Pakistan government and people to the UAE for their support for the quake victims.

He indicated that he had also discussed with UAE officials the growing bilateral relations and means of enhancing them even further as well as developments in the Middle East. He said with the help of Arab and Islamic nations and the world community, his country would overcome the ordeal.

"It is a very heart warming experience and we are grateful to international community, grateful to the government of UAE for doing such a remarkable job." The Minister was particularly thankful to the UAE government and Zayed hospital authorities for looking after Pakistan patients.

"It is such a remarkable job as these are major injuries to the back, to the head, to pelvis or to the lips and from what I understood today after my tour here, that overwhelming majority of cases will get cured Inshallah and they will be able to lead normal life and I think this shows how dedicated the doctors are and it is really touching the way the Pakistani community here has come by to help all the patients," he opined.

A total of 28 Pakistani injured are being treated in Zayed Military, Khalifa and Mafraq hospitals. According to Dr Rashid Al Nuaimi, deputy director of Zayed Military hospital, seven successful surgeries were carried out, four of them in the spinal column and fracture cases.

He said two patients were sent back home after they had fully recovered. Al Nuaimi lauded the role played by the UAE Armed Forces field hospital in Pakistan for providing the Zayed Military Hospital with all medical reports concerning cases that need to be flown to UAE for intensive care.
