Parents' visa bond refundable

The Dh 5,000 guarantee required from expatriates to sponsor their parents is a refundable deposit. This was stated in a press conference held yesterday by Colonel Saeed Mattar bin Bleilah, Director General of Dubai Naturalisation and Residency Department (DNRD). Bin Bleilah said: "Parents can be sponsored on renewable residence visas for one year provided that a sponsor pays a deposit of Dh 5,000 for each parent and takes a health insurance policy from a private company. The deposit is paid once and will be refunded when a parent leaves the country for good, or dies." The move has been taken on humanitarian grounds from April 1, he added. Explaining the procedure, he said: "A sponsor will not be required to renew the health insurance when applying for renewal of the visa.

"The health insurance is needed because the expatriates' parents will not have governmental health cards since some expatriates bring their old people to get them treated in the hospitals here in UAE at the government's expense." "On an average, we process about 72,000 visa applications per month, which include about 16,000 for individuals and about 56,000 for corporate establishments. During the festival seasons, these are often doubled. "We have managed to create electronic records of the residents and visitors of Dubai, totalling almost 900,000, for visitors and residents annually. These records have been saved in an electronic format that allow for easy retrieval and recall of data. (The Gulf News)
