Plan to overhaul address system in Dubai areas

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) will be soon introducing the Comprehensive Address System Project for an experimental three-month period in Jumeirah and Sheikh Zayed Road, officials said yesterday.

The Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of the RTA, Mattar Al Tayer, said the project has been designed to overhaul the existing address system in a way that offers more help to citizens, residents and visitors to reach their destinations easily.

"We had formed a committee consisting of representatives of government departments in connection with this project. The committee considered several alternatives of Address System and Directional Signage, and compared them to several global systems applied in various countries," he said.

"The committee opted to use road names rather than road numbers. It has also been agreed to replace road numbers with new ones, such that road names will not be repeated. Areas will then be divided into sectors consisting of several communities while building numbers will be kept as they are. Hence this new system would not replace the existing system, but rather enhance it," he pointed out.

In connection with the directional signs on roads, Al Tayer said that it has been agreed to use names of roads and sectors on directional signs instead of names of areas, as is the case in the applicable system.

Jumeirah 3 area has been selected for the trial of the new system. A sector of Sheikh Zayed Road from the 2nd to the 4th Interchange has also been selected for the purpose of Directional Signs System, RTA officials pointed out. –Khaleej Times
