A planeload of 35 tonnes of foodstuff and medical supplies leaves Abu Dhabi today, for Baghdad as part of an airlift by the UAE Red Crescent Society (RCS). "With such a move the RCS seeks to meet the demand of hospitals and health centres around Iraq for drugs and medical supplies," said Khalifa Nasser Al Suweidi, RCS Chairman. He said the plane would also be carrying other relief materials to fulfil the needs of the population victimized by recent events in Iraq.

The plane is the 28th in an air bridge arranged by the UAE charity agency and part of a campaign launched to help the Iraqi people. The RCS has recently dispatched thousands tonnes of various relief items aboard four steamers and five caravans for the needy. The items sent, Al Suweidi said, included materials required for the construction of water desalination plants in Basra, Umm Qasr and Abul Khusaib and rehabilitation of six hospitals throughout Iraq at a total cost of Dh 120 million since the outbreak of hostilities there.
