Police dogs on trail of palm pests

Police dogs are hot on the scent of a destructive weevil that infests palm trees. The palm weevil is a pest to the country's date industry as it burrows into the trunks of the trees and destroys them.

Over the past few months, dogs have been trained to sniff out palm weevils at Al Foaa Farms in Al Ain with great success. Now the scheme may be rolled out nationwide.

The dogs' skills have been on show this week at the Idex exhibition in Abu Dhabi, where they were visited by Sheikh Saif bin Zayed, Minister of Interior.

Lt Col Jamal Habash, head of the Abu Dhabi Police dog unit, said Sheikh Saif praised their work. He added that the scheme might be rolled out across the country, pending feasibility studies.

Lt Col Habash said the shows demonstrated the significance of the dogs' ability to detect palm pests. He said the dogs managed to help eradicate weevils from 95 per cent of the palm trees on the farm, and that only bad weather prevented them from finishing the job.

The methods police use to train the dogs were also demonstrated during the show. Four German shepherds and a Labrador were trained to quickly identify infested trees, said Maj Hashim al Sayyed, head of the Al Ain police dog unit. Police said the use of dogs to discover the palm pests was a first for the Middle East. – The National
