Police will unveil their very own Formula one car on Wednesday at a grand road show along the Corniche. The car, dubbed F999, is probably the fastest police car, capable of going up to 400 kilometres per hour.
However, the chances of spotting F999 zooming by at high speeds is unlikely as the police are hoping to use the car to spread the word on road safety.
The custom-made car will become the centrepiece in road safety campaigns and will focus on urging motorists, especially the youth, to comply with speed limits.
F999 is equipped with lights, sirens and a police radio, like any other police patrol car.
The unveiling comes as Formula One fever has gripped the city.
"F999 will be a crowd puller. It has been designed with unique specifications. It is painted red and white like our police patrol car," said Lieutenant Majid Abdul Kareem Al Marzouqi, of the police.
"We secure your safety in the fastest ways" is the car's slogan. One of the highlights of the road show will be the display of police cars used by the department since its establishment in 1957.
The police music band will play during the event as well. And young drivers who have a clean traffic record will be honoured.
Parts of the Corniche to be temporarily closed to traffic
Abu Dhabi: Parts of the Corniche road will be temporarily closed to traffic from 5 - 7 pm today, officials have said. The road will be closed from the traffic signal near the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority to the Khalidiya street intersection on the way to Marina mall.
Colonel Hamad Adil Al Shamsi, Director of Traffic and Patrols department urged motorists to use alternate routes. He called on the public to cooperate with the department in ensuring smooth flow of traffic.
