Preparations are in full swing in Abu Dhabi and its suburbs to celebrate the 32nd National Day on December 2 with streets being decorated with millions of colourful lights and more than 200,000 UAE flags. The decorations in public places are being carried out by Abu Dhabi Municipality, in addition to lighting and decorating residential and commercial buildings. The lighting on the streets and roads will soon be completed.

The decorations also include arches with portraits of Supreme Council Members and Rulers of the Emirates, surrounded with beautiful motifs and flowers. The main arches will be installed at Corniche Street and Airport, Abu Dhabi-Mussafah and Eastern Ring Roads that lead the traffic to the centre of the city.

The preparations also include the renovation of the giant portraits of President His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. The portraits include the 5,550 square foot display at the entrance of Breakwater on the Corniche and the portrait in front of Baynounah Tower on the Corniche, featuring Sheikh Zayed on an Arabian horse holding a falcon. Both portraits have been made by Liaqat Ali Khan, renowned Pakistani artist in Abu Dhabi.

The decorations also include colourful plants on roadsides, parks and other public places. The Volcano Fountain on the Corniche has also been given a new look. The fountain and its surrounding areas have been decorated with thousands of lights and hundreds of UAE flags. "The work on the fountain decoration is almost complete. The lighting design will give this popular place an impressive look from a distance," said a worker.

Private companies and community organisations are also expected to decorate their premises with lights and national flags and host special programmes highlighting three decades of infrastructure development in the country.

Special programmes are also being prepared by cultural organisations and government agencies. This year's celebrations will also include displaying the 1,006th portrait of Sheikh Zayed painted by Liaqat Ali Khan. The painting of the President on a horseback is being displayed just after Maqta Bridge in Abu Dhabi as part of the celebrations. It is 32 feet high and three feet wide.

Before this he had made another painting of Sheikh Zayed as part of the National Day celebrations. The 7x6 metre oil brushed portrait has been installed on Ajban Road near Abu Dhabi-Dubai Highway. It is decorated with Islamic mosaics with a floral ground. The painting shows the President sitting on a traditional rug in a garden. (The Gulf News)
