President Khalifa renews UAE's solidarity with the Palestinian people

New York: President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan yesterday renewed the United Arab Emirates' continued solidarity with the Palestinian people to fully realise their inalienable rights, including the declaration of an independent and viable Palestinian state with Al Quds Al Sharif (East Jerusalem) as its capital.

This was conveyed this morning in a letter from His Highness to Ambassador Abdou Salam Diallo, Chairman of the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People, on the occasion of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, celebrated by the United Nations Secretariat at its Headquarters in New York.

His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan welcomed the significant recent efforts undertaken internationally, including the efforts of the United States to ensure the success of resumed Palestinian-Israeli negotiations on the final status issue, in line with international obligations and the Arab Peace Initiative.

His Highness expressed his deep concern regarding the persistently negative and aggravating efforts by Israel that threaten the entire political process. He called for the continued application of international pressure on Israel to halt its settlement activities. His Highness stressed that Israeli occupation of the Palestinian land harms both the Palestinian and the Israeli people, and threatens peace and security in the entire region.

The letter submitted on occasion of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People reads as follows: Ambassador Abdou Salam Diallo, Chairman of the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People It is my great pleasure, on behalf of the United Arab Emirates, its government and its people, to extend our profound thanks and appreciation, both to you personally and to the members of this distinguished Committee, for your unwavering and constructive efforts in highlighting this important International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, which we celebrate each year to express the international community's continued support for justice for the Palestinian cause.

Furthermore, on this occasion we wish to extend our sincere appreciation for the efforts exerted by His Excellency United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon and those of his team working to ensure implementation of international obligations and resolutions on the Middle East problem.

Today, we in the United Arab Emirates renew our solidarity with and support for the Palestinian people and their just and legitimate struggle to end Israeli occupation of their homeland and to realise fully their inalienable national rights congruent with other nations of the world.

We welcome the significant on-going efforts by the United States to ensure the success of the resumed Palestinian-Israeli negotiations on final status issues, based on the borders prior to the Israeli occupation of Arab and Palestinian lands, including East Jerusalem, in June 1967. We support a resolution in line with international law, which will in turn salvage a peaceful, two-state solution in line with the principles of the Road Map and the Arab Peace Initiative as well as related resolutions 242, 383 and Land for Peace.

We look forward to a more enhanced role for the Quartet, including the United Nations, in effectively supporting the efforts of the resumed Palestinian-Israeli negotiations in order to guarantee a comprehensive, just and timely resolution of final status issues, most importantly the issues of borders, Jerusalem and refugees.

We express our deep concerns over the persistently negative and aggravating efforts by Israel, which cannot be ignored, most importantly the on-going policy of expanding illegal settlements on Palestinian land, including in East Jerusalem. This is in addition to continued policy of house demolition, Palestinian land and property confiscation and the unjust imprisonment of thousands of Palestinians. These activities are in grave and blatant violation of international law and the Fourth Geneva Convention of 1949, and in turn threaten the political discourse as a whole, and impede peace efforts in the region.

We therefore demand the continued application of international pressure on Israel to halt its settlement activities, dismantle existing settlements, and to lift its illegal restrictions on the Palestinians, including ending the siege of the Gaza Strip, in order to avoid the collapse of the peace negotiations once again. We reaffirm our view that Israeli occupation of Palestinian land cannot continue. It is harmful to Palestinians and Israelis alike, and a threat to peace and security in the entire region.

In conclusion, we look forward to the declaration of an independent and viable Palestinian state with Al Quds Al Sharif (East Jerusalem) as its capital in the near future as the main condition to ending the Arab-Israeli conflict and achieving just, durable and peaceful resolution to the Middle East problem. We hope that donor countries and the international community in general will increase their support to the Palestinian Authority, its entities and its latest economic initiative, which aims to achieve economic growth and improve the welfare of the Palestinian people, and also support a successful outcome to the current political process. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
