President Niyazov receives Mansour bin Zayed

Ashgabat - The President of Turkmenistan Saparmurat Niyazov received here on Monday Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Presidential Affairs. Sheikh Mansour arrived yesterday in Ashgabat at the head of a high-level UAE delegation including Mohammed bin Dha'en Al Hamili, Minister of Energy.



During the meeting , Sheikh Mansour delivered a letter from President H.H Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, inviting President Niyazov to visit the UAE.



President Niyazov accepted the invitation but the date will be set later. Sheikh Mansour also conveyed the greetings of Sheikh Khalifa to the Turkumen leader, wishing him every progress prosperity. For his part, President Niyazov asked Sheikh Mansour to convey his greetings and well-wished to President Khalifa.



President Niyazov also held fruitful talks with Sheikh Mansour, which culminated in the signing of a memorandum of understanding, aimed bolstering bilateral cooperation. The MoU spells out areas of cooperation as well as establishment of joint ventures in the field of energy.



The MoU was signed on behalf of Turkmenistan by President Niyazov and for the UAE by Sheikh Mansour.



In remarks shortly after singing the MoU, the Turkmen leader said he was proud of the level of cooperation with the UAE, noting that the two countries owed their strong relations to the keenness of President Sheikh Khalifa. He added that both Abu Dhabi and Ashgabat were heading towards a new era of close cooperation on political, economic, trade and investment spheres.



For his part, Sheikh Mansour said the UAE's leadership and people were profoundly appreciative of the importance attached by President Niyazov to the UAE-Turkmen relations. "The fact that President Niyazov has been keen to personally sign this MoU underscores his commitment to boost bilateral relations", said Sheikh Mansour.



He added that the MoU would pave the way for a new chapter of cooperation between the two countries. Addressing media representatives afterwards, Sheikh Mansour said the MoU had laid down the framework for joint investments in the areas of oil and gas as well as other areas.



Feasibility studies are also underway to develop oil and gas fields in Caspian Sea. A technical Turkmen delegation will visit the UAE soon for this purpose, he said. President Niyazov also extended an invitation to Sheikh Khalifa to attend the 15th anniversary of the independence of Turkmenistan.



The UAE and Turkmenistan established diplomatic ties in 1995 with the UAE opening its first diplomatic mission in 2002. (Emirates News Agency, WAM)
