Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad al Thani, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of the Qatar Museums Authority delivered a speech at the outset of the inauguration ceremony of the Museum of Islamic Art in which she welcomed the Emir of Qatar and heads of states attending the event.

Qatar News Agency quoted Sheikha Al Mayassa as saying the museum will also convey the beauty of Islamic culture to a world that has dealt with Islam and its civilization subjectively.

"We also hope the Museum of Islamic Art will offer scholars and researchers from Qatar and around the Muslim world opportunities to study various aspects of Islamic art. This museum is an invitation to Muslims to look at Islamic civilization and to see its originality presented through a variety of Islamic Arts, which reflect Qatar's pride as a nation that is rich in Islamic cultural heritage."

Sheikh Hamad, accompanied by Sheikh Khalifa and other dignitaries, unveiled the Museum's plaque and toured its different sections.

At the end of the tour, Sheikh Khalifa congratulated Sheikh Hamad and the Qatari people on opening the museum.

"The museum, with its rare exhibits depicting rich Islamic history, will serve as a cultural centre for all countries of the region. It is an important addition to the treasures of Arab and Islamic civilisations," Sheikh Khalifa said.

He thanked Sheikh Hamad for his invitation and wished the Qatari people further progress and prosperity.

"This auspicious event provides an opportunity for the countries of the region to further strengthen their cultural ties and to reflect the bright picture of our Islamic civilisation." – Emirates News Agency, WAM
