President of Iceland: The world is looking towards Abu Dhabi to continue to strengthen global dialogue on clean energy future

President of Iceland Olafur Ragner Grisson said Clean energy efforts give Abu Dhabi enormous opportunities in the 21st century economy but this also carries with it greater responsibility because the world is now looking towards Abu Dhabi to continue to strengthen this global dialogue on clean energy future.

In an interview with the Emirates News Agency, WAM in Abu Dhabi, Grisson, who is also a member of the jury of the prestigious Zayed Future Energy Prize, said he was invited by General His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE, to the forthcoming World Future Energy Summit (WEFS 2011), scheduled in Abu Dhabi next January where the winners of the Prize will be announced.

Asked about aspects of cooperation between Iceland and the UAE, the Icelandic president said: "I have been involved with Masdar and Abu Dhabi for a number of years promoting clean energy solutions and dialogue both in building up the World Future Energy Summit and the Zayed (Future Energy Prize) and bringing the Reykjavik Energy company from Iceland to geothermal drilling projects within Masdar City which turned out to be very successful." "WFES, for me, has become an annual global forum where people involved in the clean energy business from different parts of the world come together.

"Abu Dhabi should be very proud of what it has already achieved in clean energy field. Abu Dhabi has become the primary location in the world for clean energy dialogue through the summit, the Zayed Prize and Masdar City but also through (hosting) the headquarters of IRENA (International Renewable Energy Agency)." "These efforts and the people who come here to the summit in January are signing agreements all over the world, so it is not a question of agreements on some particular day. It is a continuous process all over the time," President remarked.

"We had a very constructive and positive discussion this morning which resulted in deciding who should be the winners of the (Zayed Future Energy) prize at the beginning of next year. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
