President of Peru confers Medal of Honour on Sheikh Abdullah

Lima - President of Peru Alan Garcia yesterday awarded the Medal of Honour of first grade to UAE Foreign Minister HH Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan during an audience at the Presidential Palace. Peruvian Foreign Minister Jose Antonio Garcia decorated Sheikh Abdullah with the order.

The President of Peru hoped the visit of Sheikh Abdullah would produce the aspired results for the interest of two friendly countries. Highlighting UAE investment in his country, the head of state of Latin American country hoped for greater joint cooperation in economy and investment in the future.

The UAE foreign minister thanked the president of Peru for honouring him, saying his trip would contribute to bring visions of the two friendly more closer.

Sheikh Abdullah said Peru could make advantage of the UAE competitive edge, its strategic geographic location and its prominent place in the world trade map.

The meeting reviewed ways of enhancing bilateral relations and exchanged views on a host of regional and international issues of mutual interest.

Later the UAE and Peru signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) during talks between the two sides.

Inked by Sheikh Abdullah and his Peruvian counterpart Jose Antonio Garcia, the MoU would allow the two countries hold talks on means of strengthening bilateral bonds and exchange views on regional and international events. The Peruvian foreign minister said his country would like to open a general consulate and a trade representation office in Dubai.

Sheikh Abdullah welcomed the step, saying it would contribute to expand relations in areas of economy, trade and investment.

The two sides also stressed the need for wider cooperation in sectors like politics, economy, trade, investment, seaports, transport and agriculture. Oil and gas sector was at the heart of talks given the status of Peru as one of the most active natural gas markets in Latin America.

Sheikh Abdullah welcomed a trip the Peruvian foreign minister would pay to the UAE in the first quarter of 2010.

Last year, two-way trade exchange stood at US$ 32.8 million.

Later, Sheikh Abdullah toured the Port of Callao which is managed by the DP World. - Emirates News Agency, WAM
