Prince Andrew impressed with Dubai

HRH Prince Andrew, Duke of York, on his visit to Dubai addressed more than 300 members of the British Business Group in Dubai yesterday.

Touching on his naval carrier, Prince Andrew said "Part of my role with the navy was to promote overseas trade, so I knew something about what international trade was."

Impressed with the speed of construction in Dubai, Prince Andrew urged UK business people to make the most of the opportunities on offer in the UAE. "There are many opportunities for UK companies to get contracts here with the major projects," he said.

"The UAE is a very important market. It is not just important because of the pace of the development, but also because the UAE is our largest trading partner in this region." During Prince Andrew's last visit to the UAE, he met with General Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Minister of Defence. "The last time I was here, I visited Dubai Media City and I was extremely impressed with what I saw," he said.

"He (Sheikh Mohammed) has a vision for Dubai to be the hub ... and when you look at Dubai on a map it is almost in the middle. The last time I was here, Sheikh Mohammed told me about Palm Island and I did not think that when I got up this morning that I would see it."

In his role, Prince Andrew hopes to help many small and medium British companies to trade overseas. "The British Government helps small businesses to take that step - sometimes they do not know that this step can be taken. Taking that first step is in some cases quite risky, so we try to get them to do it with as little risk as possible. "We are the third or fourth largest trading nation in the world and we must maintain this." (The Gulf News)
