Paris - Minister of Education HE Humaid Mohammed Al Qattami said that UAE gives top priority for education within the framework of its plans for advancing human development, which represents the most valuable and the sublime goal of the country. Addressing the 35th session of the General Conference of the UNESCO in Paris, the minister highlighted the role played by the UAE in the consolidation of stability in the region and the world at large, as well as its efforts for the preservation of the environment.

He described the UAE as a model state in the rejection of racism, racial discrimination, intolerance and hatred. "You all know that UNESCO came into existence to build peace in the minds and souls before letting people read textbooks through the dynamics of education, culture, science and communication. And this message continues until today assuming greater legitimacy in the light of globalisation and the widening scope of work of the Organization, as proved by the joining of 193 countries to its fold, the most recent being the Republic of Montenegro as well as the return of the Republic of Singapore after an absence of more than two decades", Qattami said addressing the conference.

In his speech Qattami painted the current picture of the world and said that the world has seen several revolutions and wars, the repercussions of which were difficult to contain, and the efforts to extinguish them are still continuing.

He pointed out that the UAE plays an important role in consolidating peace and stability, and makes peace initiatives with the faith that harmony among peoples is the truism and enmity should be overcome.

He said that UAE's mission is to promote stability in our region and the world at large.

He added that this mission is inspired by the vision and wisdom that are derived from our historical conviction that true religions do not clash but integrate to one another and the living civilizations do not enter into conflicts but complement and compete each other.

He added that the UAE gave top priority to the educational process for promoting sustainable development and have come a long way in building informed individuals who are educated and open to the civilizations without the denial of identity and roots.

The minister underlined in his speech the country's efforts for the education and development of women in UAE.

He expressed thanks and appreciation to the outgoing Director General of the UNESCO Koichiro Matsuura, who spared no effort in leading the organisation to valuable achievements over the last ten years. He also offered congratulations to the new Director, Ms. Irina Bokova, wishing her success in her mission as the head of the organization, stressing UAE's support to UNESCO. - Emirates News Agency, WAM
