The UAE Red Crescent Authority (RCA) has allocated Dh26 million in its current year's budget for charity projects in the Palestinian Occupied Territories to help Palestinian people, according to a report issued by the Emirates Friends Society, the UAE RCA's branch in Gaza Strip. The RCA's relief assistance in the Palestinian territories is being implemented in line with the directives of President His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, and has been closely supervised by Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Chairman of the RCA.

It was launched immediately after the outbreak of the Intifada, to support Palestinians suffering under the Israeli occupation and exposed to daily killings and destruction of their homes and infrastructure. The RCA has started implementing its humanitarian programme to help Palestinians overcome the ordeals they have been facing since the occupation of their country.

Haj Hamdi Harzollah, Member of the Society's Board of Directors, noted that the Dh20 million offered by the RCA last year was spent on five charity projects including construction, relief and seasonal projects, in addition to a special project to support charity organisations in the occupied territories. "This amount does not include Sheikh Zayed City which is being built in the north of Gaza Strip at a cost of US$250 million, to help thousands of Palestinian families whose houses were destroyed by Israelis find a shelter. This city is being constructed by the UAE government under the instructions of Sheikh Zayed.

The authority had earlier launched several campaigns in the UAE to raise funds and collect donations, and Zakat to help the Palestinian people. This assistance has largely helped thousands of injured, handicapped, widows, orphans and bereaved Palestinians overcome their critical circumstances and continue their life march, said Haj Harzollah. Fifty five percent of the RCA's total aid in 2002 was allocated to fund developmental and construction projects, particularly in health services.

A total of US$2,4 million was allocated in the health sector, US$ 1 million of which was allocated to help complete Rafah Charity Hospital, while another US$ 1,1 million was allocated to build Al Nada medical centre in the North of Gaza Strip. The RCA also allocated US$ 271,000 in seasonal projects implemented in Ramadan, Eid Al Fitr and Eid Al Adha including US$ 86,000 adhahi project. The RCA sponsors 2,549 orphans whose fathers were killed during the Intifada and another 307 Palestinian families who receive monthly assistance to help them bear the loss of their providers.
