The Red Crescent Authority (RCA) has issued a call to philanthropists and benefactors to support the Sheikha Fatima Fund for the care of refugee women and children, which sponsors the great humanitarian projects in many countries.

Addressing a press conference held at the RCA headquarters last Thursday to announce the Fund's programs, Secretary General of the RCA Mohamed Khalifa Al Qamzi said that the establishment of this fund is a part of the broader humanitarian initiatives of Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, Chairperson of the General Women's Union and Honorary Chairperson of the Red Crescent Authority, to address vital humanitarian and issues, alleviate of human sufferings and uphold human dignity.

He explained that the Sheikha Fatima's initiative to set up the Fund is a new dimension and a qualitative shift in programs aimed at giving care and protection for women refugees across the world.

Millions of refugees around the world suffer as a result of the severity of conflicts and disasters, which caused many human tragedies, with increased numbers of displaced persons and refugees fleeing from the hotbeds of conflicts. As a result millions of persons are living under the open sky without a canopy, shelter or food braving hardships and challenges of nature, Al Qamzi noted.

He said that the RCA is doing its humanitarian responsibilities in this regard and play a significant role to minimise the impact of displacement and the life in refugee camps. RCA is revered as one of the biggest providers of humanitarian assistance for refugees around the world, he added.

To reinforce this trend, came the noble initiative of HH Sheikha Fatima through the establishment of a fund for the care of refugee women and children as they are the most affected segments of the mankind in the natural disasters and man-made conflicts across the world, Al Qamzi said.

The Fund was set up with an initial donation of Dh2mn by Sheikh Fatima.

The initiative reflects Sheikha Fatima's keenness to alleviate sufferings in the affected regions and provide better care and dignified life for women and children who are the victims of crises and disasters.

The initiative has been received with cheers by the people in the country as well as regional and international organisations. It has been welcomed as an open call to the international community to pay attention to the issue of refugee women and children, who are the most vulnerable segment in the catastrophes and represent the largest proportion of refugees, as their number is estimated at 60 percent of the total of refugees around the world, Said Al Qamzi.

The RCA Secretary General said the door is open to philanthropists and benefactors to provide material support to the fund reinforcing is resources to secure the needs of refugee women and children.

He called on all individuals and organisations to contribute to strengthening the Fund's programs and support to achieve its objectives in protecting the dignity of refugee women and children, thus extending care and comfort to millions of suffering mothers and children.

Al Qamzi also shed light on the present and future programmes the Sheikha Fatima Fund for Refugee women and children plans to implement in various parts of the world. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
