The UAE Red Crescent Authority (RCA), is conducting a humanitarian programme to fight thirst in the South of Somalia through provision of drinking water to the population in the areas hit hard by the drought due to the lack of rains in the last two seasons.

Assistant Secretary General of RCA for Relief and Projects Saleem Hamad Al Junaibi, said the RCA intervened amid reports the thirst was threatening lives in Somalia, adding that the RCA immediately instructed its head office in Somali capital, Mogadishu, to assess the situation and set up an urgent plan to provide water to those in need and facing death.

He added that water was provided with tankers and reservoirs, and distributed to the population, adding that the programme will continue for 50 days till the thirst is alleviated.

Al Junaibi noted that the RCA combats thirst in Africa upon the instructions from HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the RCA. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
