RCA declares mission accomplished in Pakistan

UAE's Red Crescent Authority (RCA) completed last week the voluntary repatriation of over ten thousand of the Afghan refugees from its Chemen camp on the Pakistan-Afghanistan borders. According to Sanaa Darwish al Kutbi, RCA's Secretary General, the refugees were sent back home to resettle there after life had returned to normal in Afghanistan. The voluntary repatriation programme, she said, was carried out in coordination with the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR).

"The refugees were repatriated in batches at their own discretion and the RCA had disbursed cash and immaterial aid to them to enable them resettle in Afghanistan," Sanaa indicated, adding that ever since the establishment of the camp the RCA has been acting on the directives of its Chairman Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs. She pointed out that the RCA's programmes inside the camp were so distinct that they gained the acclaim of the refugees, regional and international humanitarian organisations, local authorities and the population of Pakistan's Baluchistan region.

"Thanks to the collaboration of various parties, the RCA was able to go through with its mission quite satisfactorily, thus mitigating the suffering of the refugees," the RCA Secretary General said. She opined that the UAE's embassy in Pakistan, local authorities and medical teams from Pakistan and Malaysia had all joined hands in the health field and that the RCA had gained " good experience and reputation" in camp construction and humanitarian welfare domains.
