The UAE Red Crescent Authority (RCA) has organised an urgent delivery of relief aid to victims of Cyclone Nargis that hit the Southeast Asian nation of Myanmar. The delivery of relief supplies was made in conjunction with the World Federation of Red Crescent and Red Cross Society. The Red Cross Society of Myanmar was also involved in the delivery of the UAE aid, said Saleh Mohammed Al Mullah, RCA Deputy Secretary General for Relief Projects.

"The RCA has made financial transfers to the Red Cross Society of Myanmar to purchase urgent relief supplies to the victims", Abdullah Al Housani, Director of Emergency and Relief Operation at RCA. According to world press reports, the cyclone death toll soared above 22,000 on Tuesday and more than 41,000 others were missing as foreign countries mobilized to rush in aid after the country's deadliest storm on record. Up to 1 million people may be homeless. Some villages have been almost totally eradicated and vast rice-growing areas are wiped out, the World Food Program said. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
