The UAE Red Crescent Authority (RCA) has begun a relief operation to assist population affected by the current events in Somalia, a senior aid official has disclosed.

'The RCA will deliver food and medical aid in the tune of Dh 11 million to displaced people in Somalia, said Khalifa Nasser Al Suweidi, RCA Chairman. He added the assistance, ordered by President H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, underlines the UAE leadership's firm desire to improve the living conditions of Somalis and ease their humanitarian suffering generated by the tragic event the African country is currently.

'The UAE leadership is following with deep concern the developments of the humanitarian situation in the Somali scene and its catastrophic consequences on all sectors of people,' he explained.

He indicated that 'The RCA is intensifying its relief operations in Somalia to fend off the potential risks that most poor and underprivileged sectors can face. We are working to meet the basic needs of displaced population from food, medicines to shelter.

Given the difficult prevailing situation in Somalia which hampers dispatching relief convoys, he said, the RCA was forced to secure essential relief supplies from the local market. Field reports indicated that the current events forced thousands of Somalis to flee the capital Mogadishu.

The RCA, he unveiled, has responded immediately to calls issued by relief organisations operating in Somalia. ‘We will spare no effort to carry out its humanitarian responsibility in Somalia.....more aid and support are on the pipe,' he affirmed. ((Emirates News Agency, WAM)
