An eye care campaign was launched yesterday at the Tanzanian island of Bamba by the UAE Red Crescent Authority.

Ahmed Abdullah Al Ali, head of the RCA, said the campaign ophthalmologists had begun examining more than 100 patients suffering from cataract, glaucoma and squint.

'The campaign, which also includes surgical, curative, preventive and educational programmes, will last for more than a week on the far-flung Indian Ocean,' he said while addressing a launching ceremony which was attended by senior local health officials.

He stressed that the focus of the team will be on visually impaired children.

Representative of the Tanzanian government Dr. Maywa Daftar appreciated the RCA humanitarian efforts to fight blind in her country.

'The RCA campaign will give a big boost to the national anti-blind programme and human resources development as such efforts will eradicate endemic diseases and improve the health environment for human beings,' she said.

She noted the RCA's trip is the first by a foreign humanitarian agency to offer medical assistance to the poor population of Bamba. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
