RCA lights up Jerusalem with charity

For tens of thousands of Palestinians in the occupied lands, the holy month of Ramadan was not just an occasion of spiritual contemplation, it was also an opportunity to feel how benevolent are their brothers in other Arab lands.

Though the Muslim Palestinians had to fast from daybreak to sunset as a religious practice, they were never left behind to go to bed on an empty stomach, thanks to the feeding operations of Arab aid agencies like UAE's Red Crescent Authority (RCA) RCA was on the ground all though the month, busy with serving hot meals for Iftar for Palestinians and distributing food provisions across the Palestinian lands.

The aid agency also distributed Ramadan charity (Zakat-el-Fitr) and Eid clothing for destitute and orphans.

The yards of Al Aqsa mosque and the Al Ibrahimi Takiya in the historical city of Al Khalil turned out to be places for special congregational prayers and mass Iftar parties.

As the sun descends towards the western horizon, long procession of women, children and old men walking to the Al Ibrahimi Takiya for receiving a hot meal became a usual sight.

The feeding operations launched by RCA covered almost all the Palestinian neighborhoods in West bank and Gaza, as well as the camps where the Palestinian refugees live in utmost destitution.

The primary figures compiled by the Palestinian authorities who supervised the RCA operations showed that over two hundred thousand Palestinians benefitted the Ramadan programme. More than two thousand children, orphaned mainly in the resistance, also benefitted from the charity distributions.

The Iftar parties funded by RCA in Jerusalem and Al Aqsa mosque throughout the month were so massive, as on the special occasion of Lailat-el-Qadr, over twenty thousand meals were served at the yard.

'Many people could not reach the Al Aqsa mosque for Iftar as the Occupation authorities blocked their access setting up security checkpoints. So the RCA sent food kits to those people. Over ten thousand food packets were sent in this way on the evening of lailat Al Qadr', Sheikh Azzam Al Khateeb Al Tamimi, Director of Al Quds Endowments told Emirates News Agency (WAM).

The people living in the centre of the Al Khalil city neighbouring the Al Ibrahimi Haram used to depend completely on food aid from agencies, especially from RCA as well as from HH Sheikh Hamdan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler's Representative in Abu Dhabi's Western Region and the Chairman of RCA; said Sheikh Zaid Al Jaebari, director of Al Khalil Endowments.

Palestinian Minister of Endowments and Religious Affairs Mahmoud Al Hebbash said that the feeding operations of RCA covered a wide section of Palestinians, who included people with handicaps, orphans, elderly people living in care homes, women associations, university students and others.

'The RCA programme left its footprint in every Palestinian city and refugee camp', said the minister.

A senior Palestinian official Dhafir Al Noobani said that the success of the RCA programme was tremendous as it covered all segments of the Palestinian society. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
