The UAE Red Crescent Society (RCA) has commissioned a number of projects in Sri Lanka as part of its efforts to provide support to the people affected by Tsunami. An RCA delegation, led by Mohammed Habroush Al Rumaithi, Deputy Secretary General for Local Affairs, opened a new housing project in the Khalifa bin Zayed City in Ambara town, east Sri Lanka.

The Dh 11.9 million new city, comprises 100 houses, is part of a large housing programme which saw the distribution of some 1,024 housing units along with complete amenities.

Internal road networks and sewerage systems were also constructed or renovated as part of the project which came into being three years ago in the wake of a devastating tsunami which hit the coastal areas of Sri Lanka.

The Sheikha Fatima Hostel for Girl Students was also opened in the Sri Lankan capital. The six-storied dormitory for girl students studying in various educational institutions in Sri Lanka is built on a donation by H.H. Sheikha Fatima, the Honorary Chairwoman of RCA. The dormitory can accommodate over 300 girl students and also houses various halls for cultural, sports, literary and social activities.

The delegation members also distributed keys of 524 new housing units built by the Authority to those who lost their houses in the city of Katakundi. The new housing enclave, named 'Emirates Housing District' was built at a total cost of Dh 5 million. (Emirates News Agency, WAM)
