A UAE planeload of 40 tonnes arrived in Yangon yesterday as part of the efforts to provide help to the 1.5 million people left destitute by Myanmar's devastating cyclone. The relief consignment, which contains medicines, tents, blankets, foodstuff and children's needs , was organised by the UAE Red Crescent Authority (RCA) on the orders of HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the RCA. The UAE's charity had earlier provided cash to enable local aid organizations to buy and deliver urgent relief supplies to the needy.

"The RCA had been in close contact with the international agencies to see how this massive human suffering could be ended", said RCA Chairman of the Board of Directors, Dr. Ali Al Ka'abi. Al Ka'abi added that the RCA would do more in view of some disturbing reports that humanitarian situation is worsening as international aid continued to trickle. The early May cyclone left up to 100,000 people dead or missing. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
