The UAE Red Crescent Authority (RCA) has stepped up its relief efforts to help those affected from ongoing Pakistani Swat Valley incidents.

The move follows the instructions from President HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and follow up by RCA Chairman HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan to help those affected in the Pakistani Swat Valley incidents.

The RCA commenced its relief operations when the fighting erupted months ago. It bought basic food items and other requirements in Pakistan to assist hundreds of thousands of Pakistani families displaced by the fighting. The RCA further allocated additional amounts to provide assistance to the displaced estimated at 1.3 million people.

Sana Darwish Al Kitbi, adviser of Sheikh Hamdan for humanitarian affairs and the RCA board chairperson, briefed today at the RCA office, Pakistani Ambassador to UAE Khurshid Ahmed Junejo, on the efforts of the RCA to alleviate the suffering of people in Swat valley.

The Pakistani envoy hailed the UAE leadership and people for their humanitarian gestures, lauding the role of the RCA under Sheikh Hamdan, on help to those currently affected by the fighting in the region.

The total cost of humanitarian and relief projects conducted by the RCA in Pakistan from 1994- 2009 stood at Dh54.28 million. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
