Karachi - The UAE Red Crescent Authority (RCA) will today send a relief convoy of 12 trucks carrying about 500 tonnes of foodstuff and medical supplies to the Baluchistan Region in Pakistan as part of its relief programme for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and poor families affected by last summer heavy floods.

A meeting to coordinate the transport and delivery of these assistance was held yesterday at the UAE Consulate here between head of the RCA team Saleh Al Jabri, Bakhit Al Rumaithi, acting UAE Consul General in Pakistan, Sardar Yar Mohammad Jamali, chief of the Jamali tribe and representatives of transport services companies.

Al Jabri said the convoy would move tomorrow and expected the distribution operation to take full week. 'The convoy is part of the second phase of the RCA's humanitarian programme for flood-victims in Pakistan where the first phase saw the delivery of about 1000 tonnes of relief items in the Sindh regions,' he added.

Bakhit Al Rumaithi, acting UAE Consul General in Pakistan, said contacts with chiefs of tribes in flood-affected areas had facilitated the transport and delivery of relief materials. He added that the tribal leaders had shown good response to and cooperation with the Consulate's efforts.

Sardar Yar Mohammad Jamali, chief of the Jamali tribe, paid profound gratitude to UAE President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and government and people of the UAE for the valuable assistance they provided to the people of Pakistan. He credited the RCA as the first aid and charity agency to foray into the Baluchistan Region - Emirates News Agency, WAM
