Male, Maldives - The UAE Red Crescent Authority, RCA, yesterday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies for coordination on a housing project on the Dhofaru island in the Maldives The project, which comprises 51 housing units for the victims of natural disasters which hit the country in recent years, will cost a total of Dh 6,256 million. It will be supervised by representatives of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, according to the agreement, which was signed by Abdullah Mohammed Al Mahmoud, Director of Projects and Development and head of the RCA delegation to the Maldives, and Katharine Clarkson, Head of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Relief and Recovery Programme in the Maldives.

The MoU calls for full cooperation between the two sides for the successful execution of the project, which will provide shelter for the victims of the tsunami which hit the country in December 2004.

In a statement after the signing of the agreement, Clarkson praised the RCA for helping people in distress worldwide and noted that the RCA was one of the major supporters of the projects of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.

Al Mahmoud said all RCA projects in the Maldives have the full attention and care of the President, H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, adding that they are also being closely followed up by Deputy Prime Minister and RCA Chairman, Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

He pointed out that the UAE leadership is committed to helping the people of the Maldives to recover from the impact of the tsunami and other natural disasters, as well as to helping the needy.

He said the MoU would further boost the partnership ties between the RCA and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, adding that the agreement will expand further the areas of cooperation and coordination between the two sides in the Maldives.
