Constructed under the orders of President H.H Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the first water purification pump in Basra went operational in Basra yesterday. The pump which will provide 250 ,000 gpd of clean-drinking water to the Basra population of about two million, was erected within 36 hours. It has been designated as +Sheikh Zayed Project No. 1+. Another water pump, to be designated as +Sheikh Zayed Project No. 2+, will be constructed in Umm Qasar and will serve the entire population of the city. Three other projects will follow in other areas. The Basra facility will provide water supplies to hospitals and other residential areas of Basra which have suffered severe water shortages.

The project was implemented by the UAE Red Crescent Society (RCS) as part of the many projects ordered by President Sheikh Zayed to alleviate the suffering of the Iraqi people, said Salim Ali Al Ghafli , Chairman of the RCS charity campaign in support of the Iraqi people. The UAE is the first country to provide such a vital water facility to people of Basra, he noted. Al Ghafli said that other relief projects are continuing in Southern Iraq, notably in Basra, Al Faw, Ammara, Nasseriyah and other areas. The operations will be extended to the areas of Najaf, Karbala and Baghdad in the near future, he added. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
