RCS assistance to Jenin now touches Dh120 million

The Palestinian West Bank city of Jenin and its suburbs are believed to have taken up much of the Dh 120-million worth assistance rendered by the UAE Red Crescent Society to the people in the occupied territories. According to Waleed Abu Mouwais, Jenin Municipality President, the city has taken the lion's share of the RCS assistance, citing the Jenin camp reconstruction project as an example.

"Since the project was first introduced in 2002, it has provided shelter to over 3,000 families which used to live in the open for a long time. But thanks to the instructions of Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and RCS Chairman, the charitable agency has opted to hire over 100 houses for the homeless pending handing over of new houses being built by the RCS", he said. He said the people were yearning for the advent of the month of October when 400 Palestinian families would receive their new houses as part of the Jenin reconstruction project.

An official at the Al Razi hospital here said the RCS had donated a device worth Dh200,000 for jaw surgery and Dh 80,000 in form of drugs to his establishment. Fawaz Hammad, Director of Finance and Administration at the hospital, said the donations were much needed for the treatment of about 5,000 patients. The RCS has extended further assistance in the amount of Dh 14 million that covered sundries, such as sponsorship of orphans, food, Eid clothing, Iftar meals during the month of Ramadan and other urgent relief programmes.
