The UAE Red Crescent Society today began a nationwide fund-raising campaign to enable it provide relief assistance to the Palestinians, who are now facing acute humanitarian conditions as a result of the mounting Israeli aggression. The campaign, ordered by RCS Chairman Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Chairman of RCS, will run until April 30. RCS Director Khalifa Nasser Al Suwaidi said in a statement that the campaign is part of the UAE's long-standing commitment to alleviate the suffering of Palestinians in the occupied territories. Quoting RCS field reports, Al Suwaidi said that UAE's assistance to the Palestinians since the Intifada in September 2000 had made far-reaching improvements on the ground. +The assistance which totalled Dh. 131 million did help in alleviating the suffering of the civilian population, who have long been deprived of basic educational, health and socio-economic services +he said. RCS Secretary General Sanaa Darwish Al Qitbi said that the society had received several appeals from humanitarian organisations in Palestine soon after the Israeli aggression. Most appeals have focused on the medical assistance due the shelling of hospitals by the Israeli forces. The RSC will receive donations through the following accounts: (1) Dubai Islamic Bank Acc. 53 46 754. (2)Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank, Acc. 20000417. Donations can also be received at the RCS Head Office or any of its branches across the UAE. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
