A UAE Red Crescent Society delegation arrived here today to mull over the implementation of a number of development projects in the tsunami-hit areas of Sri Lanka. The UAE ambassador to Sri Lanka, Mahmoud Al Mahmoud, said as he received the RCS delegation that, the Sri Lankan government and people were appreciative of the humanitarian gestures by the United Arab Emirates.

"We had also received over 165 tonnes of foodstuff, medicines, medical supplies and clothes from the charity organisation, all of which were distributed among the needy in cooperation with local relief agencies," said Al Mahmoud. Meanwhile, an RCS official said the agency had recently agreed to build a 300-house township for the victims in Sri Lanka.

"This is over and above the construction and equipping of ten health clinics, ten primary schools and an orphanage," according to Dr Saleh Al Taei, head of the RCS delegation to Sri Lanka. While in Colombo, the RCS delegation is expected to meet UN Development Programme (UNDP) officials to discuss avenues of cooperation in development projects for tsunami's victims.
