The UAE Red Crescent Society (RCS) is sending a delegation to Kenya to assess the needs of those affected by drought in some areas of Kenya, Ethiopia and Somalia. "Some regions of these three countries are badly affected by drought, which is sweeping with an alarming speed. A major famine is looming and is threatening the lives of 2.5 million people in these regions", said Saleh Al Mullah, Deputy RCS Secretary General for Relief and Projects Affairs.

The RCS official said the delegation was being sent to Kenya on the directives of Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed, Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the RCS. Sheikh Hamdan had earlier ordered the RCS to chalk out a plan to provide aid to drought stricken countries of the Horn of Africa.

"As a charity organisation with a global humanitarian mission, the RCS will never hesitate to the come to the aid of those in destitute as a result of natural disasters such as famine", he said. The delegation has also been authorised to purchase urgent relief supplies from the local markets and distributes them to the needy. (Emirates News Agency, WAM)
