A planeload of relief assistance from the UAE Red Crescent Society, RCS, left the Abu Dhabi International Airport here Friday for Niger to deliver relief supplies, including 40 tons of food items, clothing, medicines and medical equipment to the affected people in Niger.

The relief assistance is being accompanied by a delegation from the Dubai-branch of the RCS. The delegation is being led by Mohammed Abdullah Alhaj Al Zar'ouni, Director of the Dubai branch of the RCS. The move is part of the RCS' efforts to reach out to the victims of the drought and famine in Niger, which is claiming the lives of many children.

According to RCS Board Chairman, Khalifa Nasir Al Suwaidi, the efforts were under the follow up of Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Chairman of the RCS. He said Sheikh Hamdan was committed to providing humanitarian assistance to victims of the famine and drought in Niger and at alleviating their sufferings, adding that the cargo of relief supplies was prepared according to the needs of the affected people in that country. He said the RCS delegation will further assess the situation on the ground and present a report on arrival for the next necessary step to be taken in that regard. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
