RCS did halt the suffering of many around the globe: UN official

A senior United Nations official today commended the UAE Red Crescent Society (RCS) for its worldwide humanitarian aid, saying that the charity body did halt the suffering of many people in many troubled spots around the globe.



"I have closely been following the activities and the projects of the RCS as it embarked in helping the needy around the globe. The work being done by the RCS is commendable." said Jan Egeland, UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs.



The UN official who is currently visiting the country made his remarks during a meeting here today with Khalifa Nasser Al Suweidi, Chairman of the RCS Board of Directors. The meeting discussed aspects of cooperation and coordination between the UAE and UN in the areas of relief and humanitarian aid. Egeland commended the generous support provided by the UAE to the needy around the world but further stressed the need for more involvement by the UAE in the efforts to avert an impeding disaster that is unfolding as a result of drought in the Horn of Africa region.



Egeland who gained a first hand view of the situation following a visit to the region recently, described scale of the suffering there as grave. For his part the RCS chief expressed happiness over the visit of the UN official, noting that it would boost the RCS efforts worldwide. He reiterated the commitment of the RCS to coordinate with the world body in delivering aid to the needy. (Emirates News Agency, WAM)
