The UAE Red Crescent Society (RCS) has disbursed about Dh 106 million in humanitarian aid over the first half of the year around the world. According to Khalifa Al Suweidi, chairman of the charity agency, the RCS is presently engaged in relief works in a number of Asian countries hit by the tsunami disaster. "We have made great strides as far as humanitarian activities inside the UAE and abroad are concerned, thanks to the incessant support rendered to us by President H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan," noted Al Suweidi. The RCS, according to its deputy secretary general Saleh Al Mulla, is currently sponsoring 35,000 orphans in 24 Asian, African and European countries with sponsorship cost reaching Dh 22.6 million in the first half of the year.
